With the league about to start in a week’s time, it was time for SCA to cater to the growing needs of the 105 teams playing across 8 divisions in the SCA Griffin Kinetic League 2013  for quality officials to officiate in the league and to add to the pool of qualified officials in Singapore.

The first of the educational courses to be organised this year was the SCA Basic Scoring Course, Around 20 participants took part in the SCA Basic Scoring Course that was held at the Singapore Netball Centre on the 2nd and the 3rd of February 2013. The course was conducted by senior scoring official of SCA, Mr S Raghuraman. It was also encouraging to see 3 female participants taking part in course this year.

In addition to the mechanics of scoring, the course also covered laws of cricket that scorers need to know, details of umpire signals, ICC symbols used in scoring etc.  There were hands on exercises covering theory and practical scoring with simulated games and video footage. The course ended with a test where the participants had to score, with aid of a ball by ball commentary, for one of the SCA league games.

The highlight of this year’s course were: For the first time, a module was presented by a representative from the Umpires panel, highlighting the importance of the umpires and scorers working together in tandem during a game; real life scenario scoring practice using video footage; and introduction of the linear scoring method.

SCA is proud to be one among the very few in the region to have their own scorer’s handbook which covers not only the laws and other related matter but also the code of conduct and pointers for the scorers.

Certificate of participation was given away to all the participants. Certificate of achievement would be given at a later stage to those who get through the test successfully.

SCA would like to congratulate the Scorer’s Sub-Committee in planning and conducting this course.
